“Dominic’s Story Is Going TO help Change Lives”

“Meet DomINIC Barcomb”

Back in 2025, during a boys JV basketball game at Spaulding High School, a young athlete by the name of Dominic Barcomb from Milton, Vermont suffered a sudden cardiac arrest during live gameplay. When a heart stops, every second matters—the clock immediately starts ticking on a life. Thankfully, there was a woman on staff who not only recognized what was happening, but was trained in CPR and acted without hesitation. She was quickly assisted with the use of an AED, a piece of equipment that ultimately helped save Dominic’s life. Because of her knowledge, her calm under pressure, and the tools available in that gym, Dominic was given a second chance. This moment is a powerful reminder that preparation, training, and access to life-saving equipment don’t just matter—they save lives.

“Story transformed efforts”

The American Heart Association played a critical role in turning Dominic Barcomb’s survival into lasting change across the state of Vermont. Following Dominic’s sudden cardiac arrest, the American Heart Association worked closely with lawmakers, educators, medical professionals, and community advocates to push for stronger cardiac emergency preparedness in schools. They provided expert guidance on best practices for CPR training, AED access, and emergency response planning, while also helping elevate Dominic’s story at the Statehouse to show lawmakers what is truly at stake when seconds matter. Through advocacy, education, and direct legislative support, the American Heart Association helped ensure that Vermont schools are better prepared to respond to sudden cardiac arrest, ultimately helping pass life-saving legislation that will protect students, athletes, and staff for years to come.
